Welcome to our forced proximity collection—where circumstances push characters together and sparks inevitably fly. These stuck together romances feature situations where characters can't escape each other, and attraction builds in close quarters.
Forced proximity is a romance trope where characters are compelled by circumstances to spend extended time together in close quarters. Whether snowed in, stranded, or assigned as roommates, they can't escape each other—and feelings develop.
The appeal? Watching walls come down when there's nowhere to hide.
A classic! Bad weather traps characters together—cabin in the mountains, airport hotel, or stranded vehicle. Nature forces connection.
Assigned to share space. Could be college dorms, shared apartments, or work housing. Living together breeds intimacy.
Stuck on an island, broken-down car in nowhere, or trapped after an accident. Survival requires cooperation; connection follows.
Forced to travel together, share hotel rooms, or attend conferences. Professional distance crumbles in unfamiliar settings.
The iconic subset! Only one bed available. They have to share. Physical proximity all night creates tension.
Stuck inside together. Modern forced proximity with nowhere to go. Weeks of close quarters.
✓ No escape — Can't avoid each other or the attraction
✓ Accelerated intimacy — Close quarters speed connection
✓ Natural tension — Sharing space creates friction and attraction
✓ Character revelation — See each other at their real selves
✓ Combines with other tropes — Works beautifully with enemies to lovers, slow burn, or grumpy sunshine
This trope is a perfect partner:
Why is forced proximity so popular? It creates natural, believable tension. When characters can't escape each other, walls come down. The situation does the work of pushing them together, making the romance feel organic.
Is forced proximity always physical proximity? Usually, yes—the characters share physical space. But variations include being forced to communicate (trapped on phone, only contact each other) or emotionally stuck together.
Does forced proximity have spice? It certainly can! Close quarters and building tension often lead to explicit content. The "nowhere to go, might as well" energy translates well to heat.
