Chapter 1

Episode 1: First Impressions

The scent hit Yoon-ki before the man did.

Winter pine. Cold steel. Something underneath—darker, older—like smoke from a fire long extinguished.

Alpha.

Yoon-ki's hackles rose instinctively. He forced them down, straightening the patient charts in his arms as the elevator doors slid open.

Dr. Kwon Min-seok stepped out.

Yoon-ki had heard the rumors, of course. Everyone in Seoul National University Hospital had. The brilliant surgeon who'd risen to head the omega health and fertility wing at thirty-four. The alpha who never smiled. The man who'd lost his bonded mate a decade ago and turned to ice in the aftermath.

The nurses whispered about him in the break room. The cold eyes. The clipped words. The way he treated patients with clinical precision but never, ever warmth.

The Ice King, they called him behind his back.

The Machine.

The man who sold his heart for surgical skill.

The rumors didn't do him justice.

Dr. Kwon was tall—impossibly tall, at least 185 centimeters—with shoulders that strained against his white coat. His face was all sharp angles: high cheekbones, a severe jaw, eyes so dark they looked black in the fluorescent lighting. He moved like a predator, each step deliberate and controlled.

His scent preceded him like a warning.

He was also looking directly at Yoon-ki.

"You're the new nurse?"

His voice was low. Flat. Utterly devoid of warmth.

Yoon-ki felt his omega instincts stir—something primal recognizing this alpha's power—and ruthlessly crushed them. He'd spent years learning to control his biology, to refuse the pull that omegas were supposed to feel toward strong alphas. He wasn't about to undo all that progress for some cold bastard in a white coat.

"I've worked here for five years, seonsaengnim." Yoon-ki kept his own voice steady, professional. "We've met seventeen times."

A flicker of something crossed Dr. Kwon's face. Annoyance? Embarrassment? If so, it was gone in an instant, replaced by that familiar mask of ice.

"The patient in 407 needs her IV changed. See to it."

He brushed past without another word, leaving nothing but that cold pine scent in his wake.

Yoon-ki's jaw clenched.

Arrogant bastard.

"He's not that bad."

Yoon-ki shot his fellow nurse—a beta named Soo-jin—a withering look. They were sitting in the break room, picking at hospital cafeteria food that had seen better days. "He's been here three years. He doesn't know my name."

"He doesn't know anyone's name. He's..." Soo-jin trailed off, searching for the word. "Focused."

"He's an asshole."

"Yoon-ki—"

"He treats omegas like malfunctioning equipm...
