Chapter 1
Prologue: The Curse
Three thousand years ago, in the kingdom beneath the waves, there was a prince.
Sunan.
Golden-scaled. Beautiful. Beloved by his people.
And foolish enough to fall in love with a goddess.
Thida was the goddess of storms. Tempestuous. Powerful. Accustomed to being worshipped, not loved as an equal.
When Sunan chose his duty over her—chose to protect his underwater kingdom instead of abandoning it to be with her—she raged.
"You dare reject me?" Lightning cracked across the sky. "You dare choose cold stone over my embrace?"
"I don't choose stone. I choose my people. They need me."
"Then let stone have you."
She cursed him.
Slowly, over millennia, his scales would turn to stone. Eventually, he would become a statue—trapped, aware, unable to move or speak. A living death.
"The curse can be broken," Thida said. "Find seven souls who see past your serpent form. Seven who love you despite what you are. Gather the seven sacred relics of your kingdom. Then—maybe—I'll consider mercy."
Three thousand years.
He's found six souls. Six relics.
He's still waiting for the seventh.
And the stone is creeping higher every day.
